The Messerschmitt Me323 “Giant” was the largest aircraft of any sort ever built at the time. Outfitted with six Junkers Jumo 550hp engines and with a total wingspan of 600 feet, this massive aircraft could carry an entire infantry company in its huge belly.
Originally it was intended to be used to deploy paratroopers, but with the cargo door situated in the nose, the possibility was dismissed as unfeasible. The aircraft shown here is 1799329, forced down in England after being lost in heavy fog. It was the model for the Douglas DC-12, whose two-hundred paratrooper carrying capacity and 600hp engines proved so useful during Operation Safecracker, in which sixty thousand Allied paras were dropped behind German lines to work to destabilize and harass the Germans.
